I am super-pumped right now. Tomorrow after our Saturday community class, I am heading out on the ocean for an entire week with my awesome family for a cruise. We leave from Port Canaveral, head to places like Cozumel, Beliz, and Honduras, and have no plans other than to relax, eat, read, be entertained, relax, work out, eat some more, and just plain chill.

To be honest, I think the part that I am most excited about is the fact that I get to sleep in past 5am for an entire week straight. I love my job (including teaching 6am boot camps in Orlando), but I cannot wait to not set an alarm before I go to bed.
A lot of my boot campers and clients have been asking me what I plan on eating on the cruise. Now if you have ever been on a cruise before, you know about the endless array of midnight buffets, cook-to-order multi-course dinners, and endless treats and delicacies at your fingertips.
I checked out some websites about cruise food (and of course pictures of the gym) and here is my main plan of action for maintaining my health for a week of gluttony.
1. Make sure I work out. Don’t get me wrong, you know I always preach that you can outeat any exercise program. And on a cruise, that’s easy to do. But simply making sure I get in activity every single day will keep my metabolism vamped up, help me maintain my muscle mass (which drives my metabolism), and keep me burning calories after my workouts by using high intensity interval training. That might mean going for a swim, walking around the ports, working out at the gym, or jogging on the deck. I simply plan to move as much as I can.

2. Choose my battles wisely . Just because there are guilty pleasures and temptations at every meal doesn’t mean that I have to splurge at every single meal. During a typical non-cruise week, I pretty much follow the nutrition plan that my 6 week challengers follow. I love this plan because it has a built in (and strategic) cheat meal every week. I always can eat my faves once a week. So on the cruise if I merely have 2 “cheat meals” and save it for the nights that they have an irresistible dinner or dessert, it saves me from pigging out at every single meal.
3. Chill out on the booze. A lot of times it’s common to throw down a few cocktails while on vacation, but those can lead to major excess calories. What I plan to do is pick one or two nights that I decide to get a little “saucy” and just drink a couple of nights. Even having one or two beers a night can equal trouble for my midsection. Oh yea, and did I mention that my drink of choice will be red wine or rum and diet coke? Those pina coladas and daiquiris are tempting, but they aren’t worth all the calories.

4. Don’t be so hard on myself. At the end of the day, I am on vacation. I’m not planning on going crazy, but if I really want to enjoy myself on some decadent food, luckily I know the scientific formula for losing body fat through nutrition and exercise, and I can work my little booty off when I get back. Sometimes you just have to cut loose and enjoy yourself in moderation. You only live once right?

Take it from someone who has fallen off the weight loss and diet wagon more than….well…okay….probably 1000 times. The following quote could not be more true:
“As long as your going to be thinking anyway, think big”– Donald Trump

You would be absolutely shocked to find out how many calories some of your favorite foods have in them.
